Runnin' Rebels back on the road to finish first half of MWC play on The Mtn.
WHAT, WHEN & WHERE:
The
UNLV Runnin' Rebels (17-4 overall, 5-2 Mountain West Conference) are back on the road as they travel to
Wyoming (9-12, 2-5) tonight - Wednesday, Feb. 3 - to take on the Cowboys at 7 p.m. PST at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyo.
The UNLV-Wyoming game will be televised nationally on
The Mtn. and will be aired locally in Las Vegas on
ESPN Radio 1100 AM with the broadcast team of
Jon Sandler and
Robert Smith. The audio broadcast and Gametracker are available online at UNLVRebels.com.
The Mtn. is available in the Las Vegas market on
Cox Digital Cable (Channel 334). It is also available throughout the nation on
DirecTV (Channel 616) as well as various cable providers.
WHAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW:
- UNLV - which has won three games in a row and five out of its last six - will close out the first half of the Mountain West Conference season with the match-up against the Cowboys... The Runnin' Rebels are just one game out of first place (in the loss column) in the Mountain West, trailing
No. 12 BYU (7-1).
No. 15 New Mexico (6-2) has a bye this week and will host San Diego State (5-3) on Saturday... UNLV will host BYU this Saturday at 1 p.m. PST and then New Mexico next Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. PST.
- The Runnin' Rebels defeated Air Force, 60-50, at the Thomas & Mack Center last Tuesday. Junior
Kendall Wallace hit four big three-pointers in a five-minute stretch early in the second half to key the win. Junior
Tre'Von Willis led the Rebels with 13 points while sophomore
Chace Stanback added 12... UNLV lost starter
Derrick Jasper during the game with a knee injury. He is expected to return prior to the end of the season, but will miss several games. Wallace will start for Jasper tonight and freshmen
Anthony Marshall and
Justin Hawkins are also expected to see more playing time in Jasper's absence.
- In the win over Air Force, sophomore point guard
Oscar Bellfield dished out 10 assists with zero turnovers. Bellfield leads the MWC (league games only) with 6.9 assists per game. His assist-to-turnover ratio is also the best in the league.
- Center
Brice Massamba is shooting 15-for-17 in MWC play (88.2 percent)... He has teamed with
Darris Santee and
Matt Shaw to average 15.7 ppg and 8.5 rpg from the center position this season.
- In conference games, UNLV's
Tre'Von Willis leads the Mountain West Conference in scoring with 22.9 ppg...
Chace Stanback is third in scoring (14.1 ppg) and sixth in rebounding (6.4 rpg).
- UNLV shot 50 percent from the field in the win over Air Force. In fact, the Runnin' Rebels have shot 50 percent or better in its last three games - vs. Air Force, at
TCU (59.2 percent) and at
Colorado State (54 percent)... In Mountain West games only, UNLV leads the league in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and assists.
- UNLV has won three straight road games (New Mexico, Colorado State and TCU), all at places the Runnin' Rebels lost at last season... UNLV is 7-1 on the road this season with its only loss coming by four points at BYU, which is undefeated at the Marriott Center this season... UNLV is the only team to have won at New Mexico this season... UNLV lost at Wyoming last season, 77-68, and has lost two of its last three in Laramie (despite winning 11 of its last 13 games vs. Wyoming).
- Wyoming is 9-12 overall this season, 8-6 at home... In league play, Wyoming has beaten both
San Diego State and
Utah at home while falling to New Mexico by just two points, 70-68... Head coach
Heath Schroyer is in his third year at Wyoming and his sixth as a collegiate head coach.
- Wyoming is led by sophomore center
Adam Waddell (10.8 ppg), sophomore guard
A.J. Davis (10.4 ppg) and junior forward
Djibril Thiam (10.1 ppg)... Waddell also leads the team in rebounds with 6.4 rpg and grabbed a career-high 22 boards in the win over Utah... Wyoming shoots 44.9 percent from the field, 26.7 percent from 3-point range and averages 76.6 ppg... The Cowboys will be without leading scorer, sophomore forward
Afam Muojeke (16.8 ppg), for the remainder of the season. He injured his knee against BYU on Jan. 20... Waddell missed Wyoming's last game at Air Force with an ankle injury and is a game-time decision for tonight.
